It's been a busy few days for school children across the Dyfed & Afan Nedd Tawe Districts this week. Places at the Dyfed Championships were up for grabs at the four area events in midweek whilst pupils in Afan Nedd Tawe headed to Margam Park for the Apollo Teaching Services cross country trial. Here's your bonus schools' midweek round-up (January 16-18) right here on the Harriers Website...

Dyfed Schools' Endurance runners have been preparing for a busy fortnight in the annual mid-January slot at the start of the year.

A few hundred school pupils from the four areas in Dyfed went head to head as runners looked to book their spots at next week's Dyfed Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships down in Pembrokeshire.

Pembrokeshire, Brianne, Ceredigion and Llanelli hosted area events on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday featuring nearly 30 schools. There were races for almost all year groups at secondary school level with all pupils invited to represent their school.

Fixtures began with the Year 7 athletes taking part in this competition for the very first time following their step up from primary over the summer. They were followed by the combined Year 8 and 9 race and Year 10 and 11. A handful of senior athletes also ran and will all go forward, as well as those unable to be at the area championships, to Oakwood. Distances varied by race with all competitors running around the perimeter of the fields.

We saw a double-header on a grey and windy Wednesday 16th January before the remaining two took place within 48 hours towards the end of the week.

Pembrokeshire Secondary Schools from Haverfordwest High School, Ysgol Harri Tudur, Ysgol Y Preseli, Ysgol Greenhill, Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi, Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Milford Haven School and Pembrokeshire College were the first to set off on Wednesday morning, further West at the Haverfordwest Racecourse venue. Pembrokeshire Harriers and Carmarthen Harriers distance athletes were out in force here.

Just a few hours later some 50 miles away at Ammanford Recreation Ground, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth, Ysgol Bro Myrddin, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, QE High School, and Llandovery College gathered outside the Rugby Club field for the Brianne Secondary Schools races. This follows two league matches that have already been held in Brianne back in September and October. Other fixtures are scheduled for February and March 2019.

Thursday's (17th January) Ceredigion Secondary Schools Championships certainly had the better of the conditions at the Urdd Campus in Llangrannog as the sun made an appearance despite the cold elements. Ysgol Aberaeron, Ysgol Bro Pedr, Ysgol Penweddig, Ysgol Penglais, Ysgol Emlyn, Ysgol Aberteifi, Ysgol Henry Richard and Ysgol Bro Teifi were all in attendance.

The fourth and final event of an action-packed week went to the 2019 Welsh Athletics Cross Country Championships hosts, Pembrey Country Park for the Llanelli Secondary Schools competition earlier this afternoon (Friday 18th January) in some of the worse conditions available. Runners from six schools had to contend with the return of the very wet and cold weather but luckily for pupils from Ysgol Y Strade, Ysgol Bryngwyn, Ysgol Coedcae, Ysgol Glan-Y-Mor, St Michaels School and St John Lloyd School, the underfoot conditions were ideal as is always the case at Pembrey. Medals were awarded to the first three in each race and the event again incorporated an inter schools shield. Unfortunately, the trophy presentation has been delayed due to the atrocious weather which resulted in the winners not being announced today.

All the results are being added to the links at the bottom of this page, as soon as we get them. Dyfed Schools Area Coverage will also be in the local newspapers over the next week or so (January 23rd-25th)

Next up is the big Dyfed Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships at Oakwood Theme Park in Narberth on January 22nd which is in a few days' time. The first 10 in all races from all area events over the last few days go forward to the big event in Oakwood on Tuesday:

After the championships in Oakwood, 12 in each age group will be selected to compete for Dyfed schools in the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships at Penlan Arena Fields, Brecon Leisure Centre on Wednesday 13th February where they will be joined by teams from Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Glamorgan Valleys, Powys, North East Wales, South East Wales and Eryri.

Earlier this week additionally, the Apollo Teaching Services Afan Nedd Tawe Secondary Schools & Colleges Cross Country Trials took place at Margam Park near Port Talbot on Wednesday 16th January. During the event programme at lunchtime, there were races for Years 7, Year 8/9, Year 10-14 for both boys and girls.

Schools from Gowerton, Birchgrove, Gwyr, Morriston, Cefn Hengoed, Bishop Vaughan, Penyrheol, Llangatwg, Cwmtawe, Bryntawe, Dwr-Y-Felin, Pontarddulais, Bro Dur, Cwm Brombil, Bishopston, Olchfa, Bishop Gore and Ystalyfera headed up the M4 motorway to Margam for the 2019 edition and were welcomed with dry overhead conditions for the duration of the races after a period of heavy rain during early morning as the set up team got the course ready for action. However, it was far from those experienced at the fixture in Neath 12 months ago which turned out to be pretty atrocious at Gnoll Park this time last year!

Despite the tough conditions, the fixture was well supported as usual by school pupils and teachers alike with almost 450 finishers in attendance. Whilst there some good wins and high individual placings for the majority of club runners, it was also pleasing to see non club runners enjoying the annual opportunity at the trial races to represent their school and join with other youngsters from the local area. Those taking part were faced with a small lap and a large lap all within one field at the venue with the finish and start both positioned nearby.

Every position counted as a team competition was added in with gold medals awarded to the winning team in each of the eight categories. With teams of six in the younger age groups and four to score in the older categories respectively, there were overall victories for Gwyr, Cwmtawe, Bishop Vaughan, Olchfa and Penyrheol.

Thanks to all the marshals, volunteers and organisers who helped in any way on a great afternoon's competition.

A big well done to everyone who took part in the ANT Championships. Congratulations to those Afan Nedd Tawe pupils who have gained selection for the Welsh Schools Championships on Wednesday 13th February 2019 in Brecon.
