A brand new week (October 22-23) saw around 500 schoolchildren in the Brianne and Afan Nedd Tawe areas head to Neath and Carmarthen for their respective cross country relays and cross country league events. Reporting from the last 24 hours...

Just over 2 weeks after the opening fixture of the 2018/19 Afan Nedd Tawe Schools Association (Cross Country Development Races at Pontarddulais), runners in the Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot areas travelled over to the Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre Fields in Neath where the latest staging of the Apollo Teaching Services Afan Nedd Tawe Schools & Colleges Cross Country Relays was held on Monday afternoon, 22nd October.

Different to the past few years, it was a bright sunny afternoon with great underfoot conditions on the field near to the Neath Harriers Athletics Track, and this resulted in a great turnout from schools and spectators alike. The cross country relays returned to Cwrt Herbert's Sports Centre after very successful fixtures in 2016 and 2017, with this year's edition seeing probably one of the biggest turnouts since it was introduced.

Indeed, it was a different challenge to many of the school athletes to other competitions, as this was more of a team event rather than an individual one. Complete teams throughout all got their own team total time.

Age Groups were the Year 7, attending the event for the first time, with the Year 8 & 9's combining into one race and then the Year 10-14 teams battling in the third and final race of the afternoon. It saw around 300 pupils from fifteen schools take part in another great schools grassroots event.

Up by around 50 teams from last year, over 100 complete and almost 20 incomplete teams were involved on Monday. A team consisted of 3 members per school per age group who each ran a 1000m leg around the perimeter of the field, before making their way down a small loop in the middle before handing over to their teammate who were waiting for them at the changeover box.

In each of the three races, all boys and girls' teams went off together at the same time, but were still in competition in their gender.

School teams present at the 2018 relays competition were Ystalyfera, Bae Baglan, Pontarddulais, Morriston, Dwr-Y-Felin, Llangatwg, Bro Dur, Cwm Brombil, Bryntawe, Bishop Vaughan, Bishopston, Bishop Gore, Gwyr, Cefn Hengoed and Penyrheol.

Next stop for the Afan Nedd Tawe District is the Indoor Sportshall championships which takes place at Swansea University Indoor Athletics Track, Sketty Lane on Wednesday December 19th 2018. Entries are now open for the final meeting of the year for years 7, 8, 9 and 10 which acts as Under 13 and Under 15.

Less than 24 hours after the competition in Neath, we were back in Carmarthen on Tuesday lunchtime, 23rd October at another schools event, this time focusing on Carmarthenshire pupils.

The Brianne Secondary Schools Cross Country League was back for the second fixture of four in the 2018/19 series. After the opening fixture at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland at the end of September, the next arrived on the outskirts of Carmarthen town centre at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myrddin.

For those not involved in running clubs, this league sees an opportunity for those stepping up to secondary schools to try out the distance and to compete with and against their friends from the various schools.

Pupils in years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were back in action at the schools' sports field at the back of the school. Again, it was a dry day and this resulted in fast running on an up and down course.

The seven schools: Ysgol Dyffryn Aman - Ammanford, Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth - Cefneithin, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr - Llandeilo, Ysgol Bro Myrddin - Carmarthen, Queen Elizabeth School - Carmarthen, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf - Whitland and Llandovery College - Llandovery again brought teams as the league approached the half way point.

The course was split into two - with some running the full perimeter of the sports field with others adding in a half lap which took them around the a small woodland part to the top end of the back rugby field. The Year 7 Girls got thing underway with a full lap before the Year 7 Boys (1.5 laps); Year 8 Girls (1.5 laps); Year 8 Boys (2 laps); Year 9 & 10 Girls (2 laps) and Year 9 & 10 Boys (2.5 laps) followed on soon after.

Following a 300-plus turnout in Dyffryn Taf, the latest match also had great numbers from the schools with a total finishing number of 230 running this time around. Most finishers came in the Year 7 Boys and Year 7 Girls, which approached the fifty mark.

Here's how we stand at the half way mark after two matches held in the team positions: 1 Maes Y Gwendraeth (1673pts); 2 Dyffryn Taf (1628pts); 3 Dyffryn Aman (1462pts); 4 QE High (1391pts); 5 Bro Myrddin (1379pts); 6 Bro Dinefwr (1310pts); 7 Llandovery College (775pts)

The Brianne Schools Cross Country League is covered in full for the second year in succession in the local press (Carmarthen Journal & Carmarthenshire Herald) and this will be featured in two weeks' time (week starting 5th November).

A date has been confirmed for the third round which will be held at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr in Llandeilo on Tuesday 20th November staring at 1pm. The start of the new year will see a busy schedule with the Area Cross Country Championships to come as well as Indoor Sportshall and a grand finale to the season's Brianne Schools League.
