The first of four fixtures in this Brianne Secondary Schools Cross Country League headed down the A40 to Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland. It's become a popular grassroots event for secondary schools in the Carmarthenshire area having been organised for a number of years. The league races are open to those in years 7, 8, 9 and 10. This is the opening opportunity for those stepping up to secondary level to try out cross country and to compete with and against their friends from the various schools.

Pembrokeshire is the other county in Dyfed to put on these league races this time of year and matches will be in Haverfordwest and Milford Haven in the coming weeks. Llanelli and Ceredigion schools host their championships in January before joining up with the rest of the district for the Dyfed championships (TBC).

The seven schools in the Brianne area: Ysgol Dyffryn Aman - Ammanford, Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth - Cefneithin, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr - Llandeilo, Ysgol Bro Myrddin - Carmarthen, Queen Elizabeth School - Carmarthen, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf - Whitland and Llandovery College - Llandovery were those down in Whitland on Tuesday afternoon with the Cefneithin School coming out on top in this one.

The normal course map applied to those taking part as in previous years. The Year 7 Girls were the first to set off at 1pm doing 1 and a half laps and this was followed by the Year 7 Boys (2 laps); Year 8 Girls (2 laps); Year 8 Boys (2.5 laps); Year 9 & 10 Girls (2.5 laps) and Year 9 & 10 Boys (3 laps). The races took place around the perimeter of the schools' sports field.

All those year 7 athletes competing attended the Brianne league for the very first time having jumped up from primary school races. There was plenty of talent out within this category and we hope you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to the upcoming cross country months.

The dry weather, in contrasting conditions to those seen last week (with the Carmarthenshire Primary Schools having to be cancelled due to poor weather) helped attract a large number of pupils from each school to the opening fixture with a total of 303 finishers at the 2018/19 series opener in Dyffryn Taf. Coming as no surprise, the biggest number of finishers came from the younger age groups.

Some 40 minutes up the road East at Pontarddulais later on Tuesday afternoon, the winter cross country season for pupils in the Swansea, Neath Port Talbot area got underway. Over at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School, it was the second instalment of the Apollo Teaching Services Afan Nedd Tawe Schools & Colleges Cross Country Development Races held there and saw its biggest turn out yet.

Athletes ran around the perimeter of the schools' sports field before coming back around in the middle and arriving at the finish line on the corner of the field. There were races for boys and girls in all year groups for comprehensive schools - year 7 to 14.

The Year 7 Girls were the first to set off on their 2 lap course at 4pm before the respective boys did the same (the first opportunity for these youngsters to compete at secondary school level). The Year 8 & 9's ran a total of 2.5 laps while the Year 10-14 all running together completed 3 laps of this up and down route.

In total, there were 343 pupils in attendance taking part in this early season opener. The event was aimed at giving young children from across the district a way to get involved in these development races, with some not involved with Welsh clubs and not getting any other opportunity to compete at other levels throughout the year.
